Who We Are PDF Print E-mail

We are a community of grace, seeking to glorify God by worshipping Him, nurturing and teaching His people, serving our city, and proclaiming the hope and forgiveness found in Christ to all people.

We are:

A community
We are people, just like you. We are men and women from a variety of backgrounds and ethnicities, both poor and prosperous, who are all seeking to make  a place where we can be real with one another and support and care for one another based on our mutual love for Jesus Christ. Jesus said people will know we follow Him by how we love one another and it is our desire to do just that.

Of grace
We also know that we cannot be truly selfless and caring toward one another were it not for the fact of the gospel of grace. We know that God has shown grace to us in spite of ourselves and that the community and love we seek to build is only possible because God first showed his love to us through Jesus Christ.

Seeking to glorify God
One of our historic creeds asks the all-important question - Why are we here?
Q: What is the chief end of man?
A: To glorify God and enjoy Him forever.
So the answer to every WHY question is - The Glory of God. We seek to glorify God in everything that we do. We often fail, but we also often find that through the means that God has given us, that He fills us with delight and joy and happiness in Himself and then He is glorified.

By worshipping Him
One of the most important of those means by which God deepens our love for him is through Worship. We gather together, we sing , we rejoice together in the sacraments, we delight in God's Word preached to us.

Nurturing and teaching His people
We take seriously our calling to spur each other on to love and good deeds and to deepen our faith in Jesus Christ. So we gather together throughout the week, to listen to one another and to hear God's Word, to eat and enjoy each other's company and to build friendships that will last literally forever.

Serving our city
We truly love Decatur, Alabama. We have a good mix of people who were born and raised here and those who were not. However, we share a common desire to be like a beacon to this city by the river. You will notice in the graphic design at the top of this web page that we have emphasized the cross above the river and the bridge, which are two important symbols of our city. We want to show the love and the passion of Jesus Christ to this city where God has placed us.

Proclaiming the hope and forgiveness found in Christ to all people.
Ultimately, the greatest and most important way to serve our city is by telling anyone who will listen about the great hope we have in the gospel of Jesus Christ. This is the truth that Jesus came and lived a perfect life and then died a horrible death, all to save unworthy people like us. All He asks is that we believe and trust in Him to make that truth real in our own lives. This is not a one-time gospel. This is what we must believe and preach to ourselves every day for the rest of our lives if we are to lead lives that glorify Him and bring true joy. That is our message.
