Paper Hearts

The card ministry of Decatur Presbyterian Women of Grace

“If then there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy, make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others.

Philippians 2:1-4

In this digital age of emails, tweets, texts, Facebook and Twitter, handwritten notes and cards have become increasingly rare. But think a minute…does your heart smile when you open the mailbox to find a card from someone? If you believe in the power of a handwritten message, you're invited to join the newly formed Women of Grace “Paper Hearts” Ministry.

What is it?

It is care and love that is felt, and then expressed. It is like fruit from the vine that delights the heart, nourishes the spirit, and brings needed comfort to the soul. Sending a greeting card that expresses the thoughts of your heart for a friend or loved one is a tangible way of showing you care. When you send a card you are really sending a little part of your heart.

Why do this?

A card not only gives you the opportunity of expressing our own hearts, but it also gives us a wonderful opportunity to express God’s heart. It tells the receiver that we care, but more importantly, God cares too. While it is just a piece of paper, a card which creates a connection between sentiment and Scripture accomplishes many things:

  • it has the potential of making an eternal difference in someone’s life
  • it provides the basis for true hope and encouragement
  • it creates a doorway into someone’s heart that may not be opened in any other way
  • it reminds them that someone cares about what they’re going through, that someone loves them, that God loves them.
  • it allows you to plant seeds of truth along with a caring, personal message

When we send a card, we can confidently pray that God will use it to encourage the receiver.

And so “Paper Hearts” would like to bless our members (as well as those we hold dear) with cards for the following occasions: to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries, to welcome newcomers and new arrivals; to congratulate newlyweds; to express loving encouragement during times of struggle and sympathy to those who have suffered the loss of a loved one, to encourage those who are home-bound, to bolster our covenant children who are on college campuses, to acknowledge milestone events and more.

You do not need to sign up for this ministry, but if you know of someone who would enjoy receiving a card, please let the “Paper Hearts” team know by sending a request to This email address is being protected from spambots.
