Welcome from Pastor

WELCOME TO DECATUR PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

C.S. Lewis once wrote, "Christianity is either true and of infinite importance or not true and of absolutely no importance, but one thing Christianity can never be is moderately important.”

We desire to be a church for the city of Decatur, a place where believers, skeptics, and the spiritually curious are all lovingly welcomed—to explore, discuss, and think through the claims of Christ honestly and meaningfully.

If you were to further explore DPC, I think you would find yourself welcomed into four things:

WORSHIP is the heart, the soul, the engine, the foundation for all the church’s work in this world. Whatever the church is called to be, the first thing we’re called to be is worshippers. At DPC, we hope and pray that in our worship services, the assembled people are truly encountering the living Christ in a joyful yet reverent way. Throughout the service, we want to receive all the benefits of God’s presence, God’s forgiveness, God’s Word, God’s sacraments, and God’s blessing. We want a richly participatory, humble, confessional, prayerful, edifying, gospel-driven, cross-centered, Spirit-filled, praise-drenched yet “accessible” worship service that is lived out in the language and rhythms of peoples’ lives.

Our CHURCH COMMUNITY is called by God to live together as a loving, nurturing fellowship. At DPC, we hope and pray that people are being meaningfully connected to one another in the life of the church. Every single one of Christ’s people has a significant place in the family; they need to fill that place, and the church needs them to fill that place. Those who live on the fringes of the church’s fellowship—feeling marginal—need to be drawn more deeply into the life of the community. The church is called to be a culture of hospitality, nurture, love, accountability, friendship, encouragement, and serving others.

DISCIPLESHIP is the teaching ministry of the church for the equipping of the saints and the building up of the body of Christ. We disciple one another so that we might all follow Christ faithfully; in the church, in the family, in the workplace, and in the world. It is the particular concern of every generation of the church to see that the faith is passed on to our children in every way. It is also the concern of those who are more experienced in the faith to ensure those who are young and inexperienced in the faith are given opportunities for focused discipleship. At DPC, we hope and pray our church is producing a faithful people who have been utterly transformed by the gospel—a people who are prepared to love God with all of their heart, soul, & mind, and also ready to sacrificially love their neighbor as themselves.

The church's "MISSION" refers to all of our efforts to impact our community through outreach, service, missions, evangelism, etc. We want DPC to be a church that goes into our community and our world with the good news of what was accomplished when Christ walked out of that tomb! We want to love and serve the city in which God has placed us; we don’t want to sit around and wait for the world to come to us.

These are the things for which we were made!  Come join us as we explore them together.
